Yesterday, the Conservancy—and the world—lost an icon of entertainment, style, and preservation. Diane Keaton’s legacy with the L.A. Conservancy stands as a testament to the power of heartfelt advocacy and the profound difference one passionate person can make in shaping a city’s cultural memory.

Over nearly two decades as a board member, Keaton poured her energy into preserving not only historic places but also the stories and identities that define Los Angeles—a city she deeply loved.

Her journey with the Conservancy began with a fascination for historic homes, blossoming into a commitment that placed her at the center of major preservation efforts, including the valiant fight to save the Ambassador Hotel. Though that battle was lost, Diane’s resolve only deepened, turning her disappointment into determination to safeguard the city’s remaining treasures.

“Diane celebrated preservation victories, participated in our events, and brought her trademark grace and visibility to the Conservancy’s work—never hesitating to open doors with her name when she believed it could make a difference,” says Adrian Scott Fine, President and CEO.

Her dedication was rooted in a personal connection to Los Angeles and in her love for the stories of this city. Diane made preservation accessible and inspired countless others through her enthusiasm. She understood that preserving buildings meant protecting the spirit and memory of a city, reminding us all to “keep me in your heart, and next time, try harder” for the places that matter.

For the Conservancy, Diane Keaton was never simply a board member—she was a guiding force and a part of our family. Her passion and generosity have left an indelible mark on Los Angeles.
